Making your environment suitable for visually impaired
Whenever a sighted person enters a room (especially large areas in large buildings), they instantly and almost subconsciously gather a collection of introductory information, much of which is non-transitory: Where are the exits? Obstacles? Walls? Elevators? etc. Visually impaired people have no such capability to survey each new environment. When the visually challenged user enters a building supported by IPS, the app downloads pertinent data directly from the server. The user can navigate through the building using the app's Voice output feature which will guide the user on its path and will also give various paths to choose from.
Modeling your indoor environment
Whether you want to visualize your building in 3D or implement location-based services, everything starts with a model. We continue to use a modeling toolkit that we have developed during the course of our research. It allows to represent multi-level indoor environments in a way that enables route finding and visualizations from various perspectives. The modeling process usually starts with architectural drawings, preferably as PDF documents. A mesh of polygons is used to represent the physical structure of the environment, like streets, places, buildings and rooms. Besides the geometrical model, the editor allows the symbolical annotation of the polygons and the possibility of edges, for example doors and windows. This information is necessary for the route finding algorithm. In order to support our indoor positioning engine, the editor allows to place RFID or infrared beacons within the model. We can also include landmark objects, shelves, and digital media signage.

1. Location Based Services in Indoor Environments
Commercially highly relevant applications for the mass market are the so‐called Location‐Based Services (LBS) which make use of the geographical position to deliver context‐dependent information accessible with a mobile device. - Navigation Navigating inside large shopping malls, museums, airports, office buildings, college campuses, manufacturing plants, conference and convention venues.

2. Comprehensive Positioning
The Indoor Positioning System can track any Bluetooth device registered in its database. As a synced Bluetooth device pairs and un-pairs at known locations, IPS records the time and date of its movements. By consulting the desktop interface, employee location records can easily be found and monitored. When IPS is coupled with the Alarm Control System (ACS), the solution can enable employees to quickly notify supervisors of emergencies by pressing a panic button on their mobile device. A message is then sent to the appropriate response team with the employee’s alarm notification type and his last known time-stamped location.
3. Lone Worker Protection
IPS can be used to create critical or safe areas. When an employee enters a designated critical zone, IPS automatically activates the Centralized Lone Worker (CLW) application to ensure his safety and wellbeing. To do so, CLW pings the employee every predetermined interval of time; the employee’s response in a timely manner confirms that he is alright. If the employee does not respond to CLW, an alarm message is then sent to the appropriate response individual or team for them to investigate the situation. Safe areas work in the opposite way, as CLW is automatically turned off when an employee enters a designated safe zone, for example the cafeteria or the offices.
4. Real Time Indoor Navigation for Visually Impaired
Blind or visually impaired people find it difficult to navigate independently in both outdoor and indoor environments. The outdoor navigation problem can be solved by using systems that have GPS support. But indoor navigation systems for the blind or visually impaired are still a challenge to conquer, given the requirements of low cost and user friendly operation. In order to enhance the perception of indoor and unfamiliar environments for the blind and visually-impaired, as well as to aid in their navigation through such environments, we propose a novel approach that provides context–aware navigation services.
5. Police and Firefighters
Indoor positioning capabilities provide important benefits in law enforcement, rescue services, and fire services i.e. location detection of firemen in a building on fire. The police benefits from several relevant applications, such as instantaneous detection of theft or burglary, detection of the location of police dogs trained to find explosives in a building, locating and recovery of stolen products for post‐incident investigations, crime scene recovery, statistics and training but also in the prevention of crime, e.g. with tagged devices for establishing so‐called geofenceing i.e. alarm systems which can detect whether a person or an asset has left a certain area unauthorized.

9. Structural Health Monitoring
Sensors incorporated into steel reinforcements within concrete can perform strain measurements with high resolution. Strain sensing systems based on passive sensor‐integrated RFIDs can measure strain changes and deformation caused by loading and deterioration.
